🎮 What is Chess?
Chess is the world's most famous strategy board game played on an 8×8 grid. Each player controls 16 pieces (1 King, 1 Queen, 2 Rooks, 2 Bishops, 2 Knights, 8 Pawns), and the goal is to checkmate the opponent's King. With over 1500 years of history, chess is enjoyed by hundreds of millions worldwide.
📋 Basic Rules
Setup:
Played on an 8×8 checkered board. White always moves first. Each player places major pieces on the first rank and pawns on the second rank.
Starting the Game:
White moves first, then players alternate turns. Click a piece to select it, then click a valid square to move.
Winning:
Win by checkmating the opponent's King (King is under attack and cannot escape). You also win if your opponent resigns or runs out of time.
Draw:
A draw can occur through stalemate (no legal moves but not in check), insufficient material, threefold repetition, or the 50-move rule. Players can also agree to a draw.
♟️ Piece Guide
King ♔:
The most important piece. Moves one square in any direction. If your King is checkmated, you lose the game!
Queen ♕:
The most powerful piece. Moves any number of squares horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. Combines the power of Rook and Bishop.
Rook ♖:
Moves any number of squares horizontally or vertically. Very powerful in endgames. Participates in castling with the King.
Bishop ♗:
Moves diagonally any number of squares. Each Bishop stays on its starting color throughout the game. You start with two Bishops (light-squared and dark-squared).
Knight ♘:
Moves in an 'L' shape: 2 squares in one direction and 1 square perpendicular. The only piece that can jump over other pieces!
Pawn ♙:
Moves forward one square but captures diagonally. Can advance two squares on its first move. Promotes to Queen, Rook, Bishop, or Knight when reaching the last rank.
⚡ Special Moves
Castling:
A special move involving the King and Rook. The King moves two squares toward a Rook, and the Rook moves to the other side of the King. Requires that neither piece has moved, no pieces are between them, and the King is not in check.
En Passant:
A special pawn capture. When an opponent's pawn advances two squares and lands beside your pawn, you can capture it diagonally on the very next move.
Promotion:
When a pawn reaches the opponent's last rank, it must promote to a Queen, Rook, Bishop, or Knight. Most players choose Queen.
🎯 Key Strategies
Control the Center:
Dominate the center (e4, d4, e5, d5) early. Controlling the center expands your pieces' range and limits your opponent's options.
Develop Your Pieces:
Develop Knights and Bishops quickly. Avoid moving the same piece multiple times. Activate all your pieces.
Castle Early:
Castle as soon as possible to protect your King. A King in the center is vulnerable to attacks.
Pawn Structure:
Pawns cannot move backward. Manage your pawn structure carefully and avoid creating weaknesses like isolated or doubled pawns.
💡 Beginner Tips
- Remember piece values: Pawn=1, Knight/Bishop=3, Rook=5, Queen=9. Use this when trading pieces.
- Before every move, check your opponent's threats. Always think about what they're planning.
- Don't bring out your Queen too early. It can be chased around by enemy pieces, wasting time.
- Place Rooks on open files (columns without pawns). This maximizes their power.
- Practice checkmate patterns. Learn basic patterns like back rank mate and scholar's mate.
